About

Moniker Review

The Bishop Blanchet High School Board of Directors has formed a committee to review its use of Braves as a moniker. While the school reviewed this issue in the early 90s, recent national and local events, along with the work of the school’s Legacy Council, led the BBHS Leadership Team and Board of Directors to make this update a priority commencing with the start of this current school year.

Over the fall semester, BBHS Leadership and Board of Directors conducted research, secured a facilitator, and finalized a roster of committee members to conduct this review process. The Moniker Review Committee, which has held six meetings to date, is comprised of BBHS board members, administration, faculty, staff, alumni, students, and American Indian and Alaska Native community member perspectives.

The fundamental question before the committee is: “What action(s) should Bishop Blanchet take concerning its Braves moniker?” Considering this question is seen as an opportunity to strengthen Bishop Blanchet’s mission of “inspiring students to transform the world through a lifelong commitment to faith, scholarship and service.”

Moving into the spring semester, the committee will be engaging local Tribal leadership and surveying our extended community regarding this question. Please expect further communication over the course of this spring semester. In the meantime, we are asking for your feedback. Please complete the survey, linked below, by April 2, 2021.

The committee has developed a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) to share with the community.
