French Exchange Program

Invitation to Host French Exchange Student, Spring 2018, in Seattle (French Not Required)
Bishop Blanchet High School, through the efforts of our state superintendent and the Academy of Nantes, France has formed a strong partnership with Saint Mary of the Port, Sainte Marie duPort, a Catholic school of roughly a thousand students just outside our French sister city.  The “Memorandum of Understanding” pairs schools in Washington State with counterparts in Nantes, to help the students learn about each other’s educational systems, language, history, and culture. These partnerships between schools are spreading throughout the Northwest, and we’re lucky to be among the fortunate participants. In March, a group of 44 students from Saint Mary of the Port will visit BBHS, arriving on March 17 and leaving March 29, 2018. (Bishop Blanchet exchange students will be invited to visit Saint Mary’s in the spring of 2019.)

Our exchange team invites BBHS families to apply to host students from France.  While priority will be given to students taking French or with a French connection, knowledge of French is not a necessary prerequisite.  Our partnership with St. Mary’s is focused as much on cultural enrichment as it is on language. Strong, positive relationships have already been built among Bishop Blanchet families and St. Mary’s families.  Students taking Spanish and German have also delighted in hosting French students and have largely contributed to building our warm sister-city relationship.  All these students would likewise be eligible to participate in our return exchange visit to Les Sables d’Olonne during the following academic year.

We’re very happy with our warm, rich relationship with Sainte Marie du Port. The popularity of the program means that not all those who apply will necessarily be accepted, even with the doubled number of French visitors this year, so please don’t take it personally if your family is not selected this year.  The young people from Sainte Marie du Port are highly motivated to fulfill the academic requirements of the program and to enter respectfully and helpfully into the routines of their host families.

If you would like to participate in this exciting venture, please read through the contract  we would ask you and your student to sign, and have your student fill out I.D. sheet so that he or she, once accepted, can be matched and begin communicating with a St. Mary’s student.  If at all possible, please type your information in the interest of legibility.  Please send in an electronic copy for ease of sharing the application with the French exchange team. About Saint Mary’s

Sainte Marie du Port is situated outside Nantes in Les Sables d’Olonne.  The school’s student body is commensurable in size to Bishop Blanchet’s, comprising roughly 1000 students, some of whom board on campus.  Nantes’ enviable location puts our sister city near Atlantic Ocean beaches, the Loire river and its historic castles, and a two-hour train ride from Paris.  The school’s popular international program introduces its participants to schools in areas as widespread as Iceland, Australia, Ghana, and the United States!  Help us make Seattle their very favorite city to visit.
