While about half of Blanchet’s students have returned to in-person learning through our current hybrid program, there are still a number of students only attending school remotely. Included in this group are a few of Blanchet’s international students.
BBHS has had an international program since the 2015-16 school year, with about 10-15 students per year coming from all around the world. We have hosted students over the years from Chile, China, Germany, Korea, Italy, Philippines, Spain, Taiwan and Vietnam. These students have typically been hosted by BBHS families and have often ended up becoming long lasting members of those families, even beyond graduation!
The situation for international students at Blanchet and around the world has been very difficult throughout the last year. Last spring, some students quickly returned to their home countries after the shutdown and had to finish the semester doing remote learning from various time zones. Other students were not able to get flights home until as late as late July. Other students opted to stay through the summer to ensure they could return for the next school year, going on nearly two years without seeing their families at this point.
Several new students who were enrolled to start at Blanchet last fall had to make other plans, as many of their embassies remain closed and travel restrictions from certain countries have yet to be lifted. The students who left last spring with the intention of returning this fall were instead forced to find a new school in their home country or continue remote learning with Blanchet, often staying up late into the night/early morning to join synchronous classes whenever possible.
Our international students have always been resilient and brave just for daring to move to a new country, learning a new language, and trying to make friends in an unfamiliar environment. Many of them have become very active members of our school community- from their involvement on the tennis team, business club, art club, math club and more. The last year has tested many of them, but they continue to push forward in hopes of being able to come back in the near future. Their presence at BBHS in Seattle has been greatly missed and we look forward to celebrating their return very soon.
