1. Fill out the STEM Day Entry form here.
2. Pick up a Pinewood kit from BBHS or order from online (we recommend this kit)
3. Build your car to meet the specifications below.
4. Bring to BBHS on Dec 2nd to be inspected and weighed and then race!

2:00pm	Preliminary pinewood rounds end, Math Match Up begins
3:00pm	Pinewood derby elimination rounds
3:15pm	Last call for egg drop devices, Pinewood and Math Match Up awards presented

PINEWOOD DERBY Details

Starts at 1:00 p.m.

Students will be tasked with building a pinewood car to the specifications listed below, from their own homes. A limited number of free kits will be available for pickup at BBHS, or you can order one from any online vendor, we recommend this one from Amazon.

CAR REQUIREMENTS

Pinewood Derby Car Specifications: Your Pinewood car must meet the following criteria to be eligible to compete. Cars that do not meet these requirements will be disqualified or required to be modified on site.

Max dimensions: 2.75x7.0x5.0in
Car with wheels installed must fit in a box 2.75” wide, 7.0” long, and 5.0” high.
Wheels must be spaced a minimum of 1.75” across the axle, ie wide.
Car weight, including wheels, axles, and any other added features must not exceed 5.00oz/142g (tip - check at Post Offices).
Axles, wheels, and main structural body must be from the provided Pinewood Kit.
No wheel bearings, bushings, or washers.
Car shall not ride on springs or a “suspension” of any kind.
Only dry lubricants are allowed.
Car must be free wheeling, ie no starting device.
Entire car must cross the finish as one, ie no part may intentionally fall or break away from the car.

*The Bishop Blanchet Robotics Team reserves the right to reject any car deemed by a panel of judges to fall outside of the spirit of the Pinewood Competition.

Egg Drop

EGG DROP details

Starts at 3:30 p.m.

For the Egg Drop, students will construct a device to prevent an egg from being broken after dropping from a height of 2+ stories! Students must bring their own construction materials, which must be either recyclable or compostable; ie cardboard, plastic bottles, wooden/bamboo skewers, etc. We will have a table setup at the event for students to obtain an egg at any point and they will have the entire time to build their device. We will have a table to provide tape and hot glue. All egg devices must be submitted for inspection at the same table prior to being dropped.

RULES

Eggs will be provided upon arrival at BBHS and all assembly must be completed onsite
All materials used must be recyclable or compostable (outside of the provided tape and hot glue)
Students may work in pairs or individually
All hot gluing will be done by Robotics students, participating students will need to communicate where and how glue should be applied

*Failure to meet the above rules will result in disqualification

Awards will be given for eggs that don’t break and achieve:

Closest to drop target (will be measured from where egg device stops moving, not where it initially impacts)
Lightest weight (includes egg’s weight)

Calling all middle schoolers! Bishop Blanchet’s FIRST Robotics Team, the CyBears, are proud to host their annual STEM Day on December 2, 2023. This year we will be holding three separate events:

Pinewood Derby
Math competition
Egg drop

*Please note while there is no registration fee; we will have a limited number of free pinewood kits available for pickup at BBHS. Kits may also be purchased from on Amazon.
